What Is Handicap Betting? European and Asian Handicap

Handicap betting balances a match by giving the stronger team a virtual goal deficit (or the weaker team a head start). It's used to get better odds when the favourite is priced very short.

European Handicap

European handicap uses whole numbers and includes the draw, so there are three outcomes.

Example: Home (-1). One goal is subtracted from the home team's score.

• Home wins 2-0 → handicap score 1-0 → Home (-1) wins.
• Home wins 1-0 → handicap score 0-0 → Handicap draw wins.
• Draw or away win → Away (+1) wins.

Asian Handicap

Asian handicap has no draw option — just two outcomes — and on some lines your stake can be refunded (a push).

• -0.5: Your team just needs to win. A draw or loss loses the bet.
• -1: Win by 2+ and the bet wins; win by exactly 1 and it's refunded; otherwise it loses.
• -1.5: Your team must win by at least 2; no refund.
• 0 (Draw No Bet): A win wins, a draw is refunded.

Quarter Lines (-0.25, -0.75)

On quarter lines your stake is split in half across two neighbouring lines.

• -0.25 = half on 0, half on -0.5. A draw refunds half and loses half.
• -0.75 = half on -0.5, half on -1. A 1-goal win wins half and refunds half.

When Does Handicap Make Sense?
